Black Women In Surgery 2024

For the second year running, BABS is hosting a three-part webinar to raise awareness of Black women in surgery.

About this event

This year, BABS is once again hosting a three-part Zoom webinar to raise awareness of Black women in a range of surgical specialities and leadership positions. Over the course of three sessions, we will be speaking with 11 Black female surgeons of varying career grades.

1.5 CPD hours awarded for each webinar.

Part 1

9th May, 7pm
In Part 1, we speak with three surgeons currently in training about making the most of your surgical training journey. We will also hear advice on how to bolster your CV and take advantage of the opportunities available in leadership, research, and innovation.

We will hear from:

  • Ms Nicole Asemota – Specialty Registrar in Cardiothoracic Surgery, PhD in Surgery Candidate at University of Cambridge.
  • Ms Sesi Hotonu – Specialty Registrar in Paediatric Surgery, Scottish Clinical Leadership Fellow (RCS(Ed)/NHS Grampian) 2020-2021.
  • Ms Natalie Johnson MBBS, MRCS Eng, PhD – Specialty Registrar in General and Oncoplastic Breast Surgery.

Part 2

30th May, 7pm

In Part 2, we speak to four International Medical Graduates about their journey through the surgical landscape. From training to becoming a consultant with leadership responsibilities, we will hear advice and tips on how to thrive in surgery in the UK.

We will hear from:

  • Ms Tayo Oke – Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, London.
  • Ms Banan Osman – Consultant Urological Surgeon.
  • Ms Ibifunke Pegba-Otemolu – Specialty Registrar in General Surgery.
  • Miss Alicia Poyser – Consultant Ophthalmologist with special interest in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus.

Part 3

6th June, 7pm

In Part 3, we will speak to four UK-trained surgeons about their experiences working abroad. We will learn about the global opportunities a career in surgery offers.

We will hear from:
